What is GDPR and why is it Important to your Business?
GDPR stands for General Data Protection Regulation. It is a regulation in European Law that sets guidelines within the legal framework for both the collection and processing of an individual’s personal information within the European Union (EU).
GDPR also speaks to exporting personal data outside the EU and the European Economic Area (EEA). Its primary goal is to give EU citizens and EU residents control over their personal data, and it helps to clarify the regulatory environment for international businesses.
The EU’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) became effective May 25, 2018. If your business has personal data on EU citizens, has business in the EU or has data stored in the EU, this regulation affects your business. It does not matter where your company headquarters are located. If your business is required to follow the new regulation and you are not compliant, you could be fined, and it could be made public.
It is very important to the security of your company’s information that you have a strong a data protection strategy that includes encryption and anti-malware security. Your company’s security strategy should also include regular monitoring and updates from a reputable company, like HRCT, that specializes in cyber security.
