Fiber Optic Fusion Splicing
Unless you’re a tech enthusiast, fiber optic fusion splicing probably sounds like the kind of thing Dr. Frankenstein got up to on dark and stormy nights. Fortunately, the truth is far less sinister – optical fibers are made of glass or plastic that is about as big around as one strand of human hair, and fusion splicing is the act of joining them together, end to end, if they’ve been severed.
There are different methods of fusing the fibers together, including mechanically (aligning the two ends and holding them there). But which method is better for your Hampton Roads business?
Although the mechanical fusion requires less initial financial investment, it does cost more per splice, and is capable of fusing both single & multi mode fibers. Fusion splicing requires a higher initial investment but has a lower cost per splice. Fusion splicing is primarily used for single mode fibers, but offers lower light loss and back reflection.
For both methods, there are four basic steps:
